David Argyle Jordan Named to Exclusive Membership Organization

David Argyle Jordan is a braille transcriber for the Utah School for the Blind

OGDEN, UT, August 05, 2010 /Accounting PR News/ -- David Argyle Jordan, a braille transcriber for the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, has been nominated to Cambridge Who's Who, a globally recognized directory of businesspeople and professional individuals who have made, and continue to make, significant contribution to their communities.

Mr. Jordan holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Utah. He has worked as an accountant in industry, has done public accounting, and worked briefly with a firm of certified public accountants in Ogden. He has additional training in engineering, also from the University of Utah, and has worked as an engineering technician and project engineer for the Federal Government at Tooele Army Depot, Tooele, Utah. He accepted a commission in the United States Army upon graduating from college in 1970, and retired after thirty years of service with the active army, the United States Army Reserve, and the Utah National Guard.

More than ten years ago, Mr. Jordan helped a blind friend use braille to study introductory algebra at the Utah State University extension in Tooele. Since then, he taught physics, chemistry and astronomy at Salt Lake Community College, lecturing for the college for three years while it sought an instructor with the proper credential (Mr. Jordan lacked the master's degree which would have qualified him to teach). After his three years of teaching, Mr. Jordan helped blind students at the College with their math courses from remedial mathematics through college algebra. Based on this experience, Mr. Jordan holds himself out as the only individual in Utah who can work calculus problems in braille.

Mr. Jordan is still pursuing his interest in braille and mathematics. Currently, he is a braille transcriber for the Utah School for the Blind, working at the school's Ogden campus. He prepares brailled counterparts for instructional materials used in the Utah public school curriculum. His products include embossed braille and braille-specific electronic files. He works with other transcribers, with proofreaders (who are blind), and with the proofreaders' readers (who are sighted). He also works with those who prepare large print and other alternative format material for students whose visual impairments are less severe than total blindness.

Mr. Jordan is a member of the National Braille Association, the national trade association of braille transcribers. He looks forward to certification this summer as a literary braille transcriber through the Jernigan Institute, a professional development organization within the National Federation of the Blind. He will then move on to a similar credential for mathematics transcribing, and additional professional development in mathematics, physics, and education.

With respect to his students, Mr. Jordan has been told "they can't," and with respect to his own ambition in the area of mathematics education for the blind, he has been told "you can't." Yet he has shown that they can, and that he can. For his willingness to persevere in the face of disbelief and opposition, Cambridge Who's Who salutes David Argyle Jordan and welcomes his membership.
